EV charger plug types explained.

ev chargers plug types

There are two plug types for AC chargers – Type 1 (SEA J1772) and Type 2 (IEC 62196). Depending on the country you live in, the plug type varies. In Europe, Type 2 is the standard while in Asian, Japanese, and American markets Type 1 is more dominant.

In 2020 the Australian Government created an industry standard that all AC EV chargers have Type 2 plugs. This helps to avoid confusion and consumers having to have adaptors for multiple plug types. Some previous models sold before this time may still use Type 1 Plugs, in which case a Type 1 to Type 2 adaptor will be required.
